Goal drought a big concern

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

The last two days have all been about trying to come up with goalscoring solutions for Amajita coach Thabo Senong (above) ahead of their vital Under-20 Caf Afcon tie against Burundi at Stade de Maradi in Niger today.

In their last two games at the tournament, Amajita have only scored one goal, leading up to a match they need to win to guarantee progress to the semifinals of the competition and qualify for the Fifa Under-20 World Cup.

A 1-1 draw in the opening game and a goalless draw against Nigeria sees Amajita in third place in Group A, level with second-placed Niger on two points and two adrift of group leaders Nigeria.

Senong also says it’s not only the striker’s duty to get the goals.

“We just need to go back to training, work hard and come up with ideas to score goals. Scoring goals is a team’s responsibility.

“This is one aspect we will work really hard on in training so that we can produce the desired result against Burundi in our final group encounter,” said Senong.

“It won’t be easy, but it’s possible if we work hard.”

Senong and his charges come up against a Burundi side that has only recorded one point in the tournament having lost 2-0 to Nigeria and played to a 3-3 draw against Niger.

Amajita will go into this game with their heads held high having managed to hold seven-time champions Nigeria 0-0.
