When the owners of Workshop 55 restaurant decided to create a unique dining experience that combines the best of fine drinks and locally and internationally influenced food served in a laid-back setting, they knew that chef Alex Webber shared their vision. It is situated at Parktown North in Johannesburg.

Webber takes time out of the busy kitchen to chat with City about where his journey started, what inspires his cooking style, and what sets Workshop 55 apart. “I’ve always loved cooking. It was as a teenager that I really knew I wanted to do something in the food industry. I was accepted to Prue Leith chefs academy and it all become quite real.”

“It certainly had its challenges. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.” “My fondest memories are spending time with family and friends, which inevitably revolves around some really great food, normally a laid-back Sunday afternoon.” “I enjoy travelling and often rely on those experiences. Whether it’s driving across the desert beach in Luderitz Bay in Namibia, or eating new, interesting flavour combinations in a traditional market – and everything in between.” “I wouldn’t say I have a favourite ingredient to work with but rather enjoy working with really good produce. I’m always sourcing produce that’s been grown with the same love as I put into creating a dish. I am often picking my own vegetables, herbs or fruit from my garden to use.” “There’s a lot of satisfaction in seeing the joy people get from a new experience or just great food. Then working alongside the great team we have at Workshop 55.” “Workshop 55 is unique. Our team here are like no other and work well together to give our guests the best service. We encourage our guests to enjoy a selection of different dishes with one of our delicious infused gins. Our premium gin and whiskey selection is the biggest around. From food to drinks we’ve chosen to stay away from the usual suspects and offer you something a little different.”
