Ultra Magnus stands out

Lightly raced Ultra Magnus could not have been more impressive last time and despite facing far stronger competition can be expected to take a lot of beating in the Progress Plate over 1200m at Greyville today.

After seven months off the track this Oratorio gelding first gave four-timer completing Cabo Da Cruz plenty of cheek, before next time out drawing right away from a MR 80 Handicap field with what can only be described as contempt, winning by six lengths unextended.

Brett Crawford’s charge isn’t theoretically well weighted here, but will almost certainly prove better than a current mark of 95 and is a confident selection.

Desolate Road looks the primary danger. Tony Rivalland’s inmate is reliable and talented, as well as being course and distance suited.

Warren Kennedy is currently leading the jockeys’ log and has a decent Eachway chance in Race 7, a Graduation Plate over 1800m.

Gavin van Zyl’s filly Railtrip is erratic, but put up an impressive trial after a rest and was Grade 1-placed here as a juvenile. With her sex allowance any repeat of that would see her come home lonely in this company and she seems worth taking a chance on.

An experienced maiden who could finally crack it is Red Hot Night in Race 2. This gelding has his 12th start, but has placed in his last six races, and runs in a field with no obvious standout performers.

From pole position it could finally be his day in the sun, and he has solid winning prospects.
