McCarthy writes off his team’s top four chances

Benni McCarthy (right) believes his Cape Town City side can do much better, following some unfavourable results in the last few games.

City are 11th in the table having collected only seven points in their first six Absa Premiership games.

With the way things are going, McCarthy doesn’t think his team are capable of competing to be in the top four.

“We don’t look like a team that can contest for second, third or fourth spot at this present moment. Something is missing and I’m yet to put my finger on it, I think we are throwing points away like there is no tomorrow,” said McCarthy.

“Teams like Maritzburg United, for example, will bite someone’s arm off for a point and we look like a team that can pick up three points in most games, but ... we are not ruthless ... we are not there yet ... it’s disappointing.”

The Mother City club’s next fixture sees them going up against Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Generally, players tend to play at their best when coming up against big clubs like Pirates.

But McCarthy adds that their mentality is wrong and the players should always play to the best of their abilities in every game.

“Maybe the short mindset is to say that are we playing Pirates next so let’s (play to our best), I don’t think I can handle that. It won’t sit well with me. I can’t coach players with that small mentality of only preparing for big games.

“You up your level but the games that matter, that win you the league, get you forward in life and yet you don’t want to participate in them ... I can’t!”
