Ferraris, Marcus are Born To Perform

- Bonginkosi Nkosi

Brett Crawford-trained Baby Shooz has placed in two of three starts and the manner in which this worthy Pick 6 banker, a son of Jackson, has finished in those races suggests he is begging for the extra ground, so should be hard to oppose in Race 4, a Maiden Plate over 1600m on the Greyville Turf track on Sunday.

He was returning from a three-month rest when beaten into third by Brass Bell most recently and it didn’t help that he was forced to jump from a bad draw.

This three-year-old colt was sitting near last passing the 300m marker on that occasion – needing to make up a tremendous amount of ground.

Most impressive was the fact once asked the question he produced a devastating run in the 1400m contest and was beaten a rapidly diminishing two lengths.

The only chink in his armour is the fact he will have to jump from stall gate 9 in Sunday’s 12-horse field.

To this R300,000 purchase’s advantage, he tops the bestweighted column and considering he runs off a merit rating of 83 while the average is 65, he is extremely hard to tip against.

Although returning from 91-day stint off the racetrack, hat-trick hopeful Born To Perform looks good value for money when he teams up with champion apprentice Luke Ferraris in Race 8, a MR 88 Handicap over 1400m.

“He is getting better and better,” said conditioner Dennis Bosch.

“Grass or Polytrack, it really makes no difference to him. He has got the pedigree, which is starting to show now. If the handicapper doesn’t get to us, we can win a few more races with him.”

Although at 61.5kg he shoulders 3.5kg more than his biggest danger Gimme Peace, the selection is smartly drawn at No 5 as opposed to his rival’s No 12 in this 14-horse field.
