Down To Earth taking off

- Ken Nicol

Down To Earth did all but win over course and distance a month ago and should go one better in a 1600m Maiden Plate for fillies on the Greyville Polytrack track today.

Making her debut on the surface, this Gavin van Zyl-trained Jackson filly didn’t have the clearest passage but made good progress late to only go down by a short head to favourite Arrabiata.

She now meets what appears a far weaker field in Race 4 and a repeat of that effort will be enough to see her exit the maiden ranks at the fourth attempt. A confident selection with jockey’s championship leader Warren Kennedy aboard.

Another stand out bet is Alfonse Baby in Race 2.

This Wendy Whitehead-trained filly by Noble Tune filly runs in a Fillies Maiden Plate over 1200m and was a strong-finishing second to impressive debutante Purple Nkanyezi when trying the Polytrack a fortnight ago.

She should have more to come and looks too good for these rivals. Kildonan Bay could give cheek, but her two places so far have both been in weak-looking fields.

Van Zyl and Luke Ferraris team up for a good Eachway value bet in Sea Venture, who appears in Race 6.

She won her maiden well over this 2000m before a seven-month break.

Her two comeback runs have been encouraging and she takes a slight drop in class in this FM 86 Handicap affair.

Add in the pole position draw and she seems certain to be right there in what is a tricky little affair. To take a bet
