DOUBLE UP: RACING AND A CONCERT AT ONE VENUE

- Thami Kwazi

The Kyalami NineHour takes place today at the Kyalami racetrack in Midrand.

The stage has been set for one of the biggest racing events of the year with a twist. The Kyalami NineHour at the Kyalami racetrack in Midrand today will be a treat for both music and motorsport lovers. Some of Africa’s major DJs will perform alongside some of the finest race cars in the world.

The race has returned after a break of 37 years, with the added touch of music.

The event, last held in 1982, was named the Nine-Hour because that’s how long it is. The organisers have taken the time to ensure the whole family is catered for with a concert taking place at the same time.

The star-studded line-up includes popular musicians like Shekinah, Prime Circle and Sun El Musician. DJ Black Coffee will be bringing his music spectacular Africa Is Not A Jungle to the event.

Current deep house DJs are also in the line-up, such as Kid Fonque, duo Lemon Herb and many more.

All this takes place during the Intercontinental GT Challenge.

A special stage has been created for the concert, allowing motoring and car lovers to enjoy the sights and sounds together.

South African electronic dance music DJ and radio host Kid Fonque has been in the music industry for over 15 years.

He is known for playing local and international stages and hosting a radio show called Selective Styles on 5FM and is a music label owner of Stay True Sounds.

He spoke to Saturday Citizen about the event. How many DJs are involved?

There are nine house acts on the “Africa Is Not A Jungle” stage, put together by Black Coffee. Why did you choose to play at such an event?

I’ve always been passionate about true music. For my participation in the event, I was booked to play for Black Coffee’s new concept “Africa Is Not A Jungle” and I’m happy to be included on this platform to showcase what I do.

Do you think South Africa has a big market for events about cars and music?

Yes, of course. We already have a budding spinning community in

the country and it’s authentic to us. It’s great that Kyalami Nine Hour is back in South Africa after 37 years. . Will the type of set you play be different?

I don’t usually play my sets beforehand but I do like to play unreleased and upfront music so I will only be able to tell on the day. What can a endees expect?

From my DJ set, new house music from all of SA mixed with some

current tunes that are working for me on dance floors. Do you like cars? If so, what is your favourite car?

I am not really a petrol head and don’t know too much about cars but I would love to own a G Wagon at some point in my life.
