William The Silent looks ready to roar in the Merchants

The Citizen (KZN) - - Racing Express - Jack Milner

The second-run-after-a-layoff syndrome will come under the spotlight when William The Silent lines up for the Grade 2 New Turf Carriers Merchants over 1160m at Turffontein tomorrow.

This Robbie Sage-trained runner was a top-class juvenile and caused quite an upset when he won the Grade 2 SA Nursery over 1160m last year. He didn’t take to Scottsville when he ran in the Gold Medallion, finishing unplaced. He was gelded in July.

This son of Var won an Assessment Plate and then ran in the Listed Golden Loom over 1000m in which he ran unplaced. William The Silent lived up to his name because we did not see him in action for exactly a year. He came back to contest this year’s Golden Loom and almost won it. He was touched off by Prince Of Kahal.

That run speaks volumes or his ability and William The Silent could get back in a winning mode in the Merchants. The only concern is whether he will suffer any ill-effects on his layoff in his second run back.

He will again meet Prince Of Kahal but he is 0.5kg better off and that could swing it in his favour. Muzi Yeni is carded to ride.

But nobody likes to see a string of wins beaten and Denis Schwarz will undoubtedly be striving to keep his record on Prince Of Kahal intact. He has ridden Magner’s charge five times for five wins.

Van Halen makes his return after a rest and tends to enjoy racing fresh. He won his last comeback run over 1100m at this course in the Man O’ War Sprint and has been supported to achieve that feat again.

Corne Spies has his yard in good nick and Craig Zackey will go close on this son of Oratorio.

It was interesting to note that on Charity Mile day horses drawn on the inside of the track in races up the straight did not perform well. It is worth keeping an eye on that during the earlier races as that could have some impact on runners like Sunset Eyes, Ultra Magnus and Sir Frenchie.

Others to include are Wynkelder, Mardi Gras, Warrior’s Rest and Gimme A Wave.
