Be summer chic at Summer Cup

GLORIOUS: A FUN DAY OUT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

- Citizen reporter

Kids can enjoy the carnival, while fashionistas can show off their style.

Since its inception in 1897, the Gauteng Summer Cup horseracing event has seen throngs of impeccably dressed crowds flock to Johannesburg’s Turffontein Racecourse to be part of the grand annual spectacle.

And this weekend promises to be every bit, if not more, spectacular than previous years.

With something for everyone, from fashion shows and parades to a carnival for kids, outstanding hospitality and 20 beautiful thoroughbreds racing for their share of the R2 million stake – there are many reasons to make your way to the racecourse in the south of Johannesburg today.

Whether you’re a seasoned punter, a novice hoping to strike it lucky with beginners’ luck or need to keep the kids entertained for a few hours, here’s The Citizen’s round-up of some of the day’s activities:

Fun for all

A highlight is the Summer Cup’s halftime show, just before the main race, which will feature drum majorettes, a massive field band, a choir and incredible dancers headlined by award-winning group Freshly Ground.

Hospitality

From street parties to elegant VIP experiences, parties on the track and much more, there are a host of different ways to enjoy the raceday.

Whether you’re looking for an awesome corporate year-end, a day out with friends or a family outing, the event organisers have you covered.

Carnival

Everyone is welcome at “The People’s Race”. Bring the whole family and experience a full-sized, world-class carnival, complete with Ferris wheel, mechanical rides, face painters, buskers and so much more.

Treat your family to a day out in the dedicated family zone, which is safely and conveniently situated near the carnival and right atop the finishing stretch.

Fashion extravaganza

From roving fashion shows to fashion-conscious guests and red-carpet-worthy celebrities, the Gauteng Summer Cup is a sartorial sensation.

A feast for the eyes, the festival of fashion never disappoints, so outfit yourself in your most stylish summer chic outfit as you prepare for a day of style and unforgettable fun.
