Stay sun safe at the races

The South African Weather Ser­vice has is­sued a warn­ing for this week­end when the third heat­wave to hit Gaut­eng this sea­son is ex­pected.

Ac­cord­ing to the weather ser­vice, ex­treme tem­per­a­tures, pos­si­bly reach­ing 40oC are ex­pected un­til to­mor­row with fore­caster Vane­tia Phakula urg­ing peo­ple to take pre­cau­tions.

Here are a few tips for stay­ing safe in ex­treme heat:

Wear pro­tec­tive cloth­ing such as long pants, longsleeve­d shirts and wide­brimmed hats.

Use sun­screen with min­i­mum of SPF 30 and one that of­fers broad-spec­trum pro­tec­tion. Reap­ply ev­ery two hours, in­clud­ing on hands and feet.

Pro­tect your eyes with sun­glasses that block 99% or 100% of UVB and UVA rays.

Stay in the shade and limit ex­po­sure to the sun, es­pe­cially be­tween 10am and 4pm, when UV rays are strongest.

Stay hy­drated with a min­i­mum of eight glasses of wa­ter per day, prefer­ably at room tem­per­a­ture.
