SuperSport focus on own house

- Michaelson Gumede

On face value, it seems as though Kaizer Chief are running away with the Absa Premiership title with the 10-point gap which they have opened up over SuperSport United and defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Chiefs, however, have been in a similar position where they looked almost impossible to catch until Sundowns overtook them to grab the league crown in the 2013/14 season. SuperSport coach Kaitano Tembo (right) does not want to take inspiration from Masandawana, insisting that his Matsatsantsa A Pitori side will need to take care of their own house.

“It is about us and we need to just win and collect more points because we cannot really think about past scenarios when we are not taking advantage of our situation. Last week against Stellenbosch it was a perfect situation for us to move closer to Chiefs but we did not take advantage of that and we need to improve. A 10 point margin is massive and they still have a game in hand, so we can’t really look at Chiefs at the moment,” said Tembo.

“We have to make sure that we take it game by game because Chiefs are really cruising and they are very consistent, I think they have had seven wins in a row and that is championship-winning form. Until we are able to win three or four in a row we can only start to tal about the league. We have drawn a lot of matches so far this season so we need to turn those draws into wins then can talk about the league,” he added.

As Tembo’s United face Highlands Park tonight in Atteridgeville, his humble nature forced him to refuse taking any credit for where the team is at this stage.
