Shinzo pulls out of summit in India

The Citizen (KZN) - - World - New Delhi

– A visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to India has been postponed after days of violent protests in the northeastern city of Guwahati, where a summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi was to have been held.

“Both sides have decided to defer the visit to a mutually convenient date in the near future,” Indian foreign ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in a statement.

The trip should have taken place from tomorrow.

Guwahati in Assam state is at the epicentre of recent demonstrations, with two protesters shot dead on Thursday.

The Indian parliament had passed contentious new citizenship legislation this week, which many believe will give citizenship to immigrants from neighbouring Bangladesh. – AFP
