Zuma’s presidency set us back years

-

ANC executive Ace Magashule, pictured, made a very good point when he said it’s high time we stopped blaming Jacob Zuma for our woes, specifically those relating to the parastatals.

He is also quite correct in saying SAA, for instance, was being bailed out prior to Zuma’s presidency.

According to the Sunday Times article, Magashule went on to say all we need are competent people to turn things around.

However, Magashule didn’t mention anything about a time frame to achieve this.

Nor did he add “and honest” after competent.

Does he not realise that Zuma’s happy-go-lucky presidency has set our country back years, if not decades, and Cyril Ramaphosa has courageously taken on the job of getting our country back on to a respectable footing where it was under the leadership of Madiba and Thabo Mbeki?

There is no doubt that at government, provincial and municipal levels, genuine attempts are, and have been, made to spread the contract work to the smaller contractor, which is admirable.

The problem seems to be that under the presidency of Zuma exorbitant and dishonest prices were quoted, and accepted, for contract work to be done.

It is quite probable that “kickbacks” come into play as well.

This is the legacy Zuma has left us, a damning indictment on his leadership. Whether we continue to blame him or not, it is going to take a long time for honesty to return to our business dealings.
