Chiefs seek revenge over Maritzburg

- Tshepo Ntsoelengoe

Just a few weeks ago, Maritzburg United caused an upset over Kaizer Chiefs when they booted them out in the Telkom Knockout semifinals.

Tomorrow at the Harry Gwala Stadium, the two teams meet in an Absa Premiership clash and without a doubt, Amakhosi will be looking to get the better of the KwaZulu-Natal outfit.

Before the Maritzburg game in the cup competition, Chiefs had been unbeaten since a 1-0 loss to Polokwane City in a League tie having enjoyed a good run in all competitions.

Now, facing a Maritzburg side which has showed that they are capable of pulling an upset, Amakhosi coach Ernst Middendorp believes the team is well prepared and they know exactly what they have to do on the day.

“It’s always a discussion what’s the right time or what’s the wrong time to play each other, We have a very clear idea going there and I’m not really busy with circumstances of the competition, the team – it doesn’t matter,” said the Chiefs coach.

Middendorp and his charges will be looking to continue with their good run of league form which saw them win all of their games in November.

But, they come up against a Team of Choice which has been able to really keep things tight at the back.

Maritzburg have only conceded nine goals in the League so far. Centre back Rushine de Reuck (above) knows it’s important to continue defending well, and says they will have to be ready for the anticipated fearless Chiefs attack.

“We haven’t scored a lot of goals, so the defending becomes even more important. We have one of the best defences in the league and we certainly pride ourselves on that,” he was quoted as saying on the club’s website.

Amakhosi go into the game having won 5-3 against Bloemfontein Celtic, while Maritzburg registered a 1-0 victory over Polokwane City in their previous league outing.
