Co­conut wine proves deadly

– Eight peo­ple died and 300 were taken to hos­pi­tals in the Philip­pines af­ter drink­ing co­conut wine be­lieved to con­tain high lev­els of methanol.

The vic­tims were in Rizal, south­east of Manila, over the week­end and com­plained of stom­ach pains af­ter drink­ing the wine, known lo­cally as lam­banog.

Nine are in a crit­i­cal con­di­tion, ac­cord­ing to Jose Jonas del Rosario, spokesper­son for the Philip­pine Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal.
