Countdown to Charlie’s Need For Speed at Kenilworth

- Ken Nicol

Three Two Charlie appears a very smart sprinter in the making and looks the one to beat in the NonBlack-Type Need For Speed Sprint over 1000m at Kenilworth tomorrow.

He was an impressive Listed winner here two runs back over 200m further.

On that occasion he finished strongly to easily see off a field that included Guineas runners Captain Tatters and King Of Gems, as well as stable mate Constable, who he meets again here.

That may well turn out to be his best trip, but he won his maiden easily over this distance and will be asking some serious questions in the latter stages.

The only filly in the race, Spring Break, is Grade 2-placed and weighted to win. She returns from five months off but is sure to give a good account of herself for champion trainer Sean Tarry.

Invidia, Constable and Battleoftrafalgar are others to consider in a tricky little contest.

Topweight Golden Tractor has completed a hat-trick of wins over this trip but faces stronger competition and may find it difficult on these terms.

The Listed Southeaster Sprint, Race 6, is run over 1100m and may turn into a straight shootout between the two class acts Pleasedtomeetyou and Russet Air.

The latter was victorious by 1.5 lengths when they met in the Grade 2 Cape Merchants recently.

A 2kg swing and slight drop in trip marginally tips the balance in favour of Pleasedtomeetyou this time. But there promises to be precious little in it and it could be a race to remember.

A value bet with appeal is Moon Rock in Race 4. This Paul Reevestrained gelding has displayed impressive pace in recent starts and may well thrive dropping in trip.

In addition, he meets a field who are generally not in the best of form and has a great chance to score a fourth career win.
