Downs close the gap

TITLE RACE: COACH PITSO REMAINS LOATHE TO MAKE ANY PREDICTIONS

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

With just four points now separating Mamelodi Sundowns from Absa Premiership leaders, Kaizer Chiefs there is a general feeling that coach Pitso Mosimane may get his wish and guide Masandawana to their 10th league title.

But Mosimane was quick to point out that it was too early to start predicting as anything may still happen. Sundowns cut Amakhosi’s lead to four points after beating AmaZulu 3-0 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday night.

Sibusiso Vilakazi (left) opened the scoring for Masandawana and Themba Zwane scored a brace to complete the annihilation of Usuthu in their own back yard.

When asked about closing the gap on Amakhosi, Mosimane chose his words carefully in his answer.

“We have a big game on Tuesday (tomorrow) against BidvestWits and we haven’t had enough rest. You don’t want to play that team when you come from a game like this one (against AmaZulu). In the first round we played them after two-and-a-half days rest.

“We have to cross those bridges before (we can talk) and we can’t get too excited. I may have told you this before, it’s not over yet. There are 15 games to go. You still have Wits, you still have Orlando Pirates, you still have

Chiefs and SuperSport United. There are a lot of teams and you can’t be talking about us. May is too far, we have to keep calm,” said Mosimane.

He was however satisfied with how his team managed to steal what he felt was a difficult game against Usuthu. He said his team didn’t play the way he wanted but was happy they got the result in the end. “We were a little bit lucky to score early and that changed the game (in our favour). When we played AmaZulu in the past they would sit back, but because we scored earlier they reacted and put more pressure on us.

“That opened the game up for us and we managed to score the second goal. But even when we scored that goal, we were not playing well to be honest. “When we played Polokwane City we played very well but we couldn’t score. But you know football can be like that sometimes. Today in the first half we didn’t play that well and we scored two goals.

“But who cares if you play well or not as long as you get results? But of course I want my team to play carpet football.

“After the third goal they came at us but we dealt well with their threat.”

“We used our experience very well to manage the rest of the game,” added the coach.
