Chiefs taking it on the chin

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

Kaizer Chiefs coach, Ernst Middendorp took his team’s 2-1 defeat to SuperSport United on the chin and says it was one of those games where they did everything right but just couldn’t get the result they wanted.

The defeat however dented Amakhosi’s Absa Premiership aspirations with their lead cut to just four points with 15 games to go.Bradley Grobler and Thamsanqa Gabuza scored for Matsatsantsa a Pitori while Daniel Cardoso (below) converted a spot kick for Amakosi’s consolation goal.

“Let’s first look at the performance,” Middendorp told the media afterwards. “We did a much better job compared to our opponents, no doubt about it. We hit the post three times. We also had two or three other opportunities.

“Of course we gave away three opportunities to them, and they scored twice. But in the end the performance was okay with the wrong result,” added the 61-yearold Amakhosi coach.

The German mentor downplayed the issue when asked if his team were feeling the pressure of being early favourites for the Absa Premiership title.

“There has been a lot of discussion since the beginning of the season and I have been in this business long enough to know that you win certain games. Each and every team wins games where you say you can be happy with the result but not the performance. “Today was something where the display over the 90 minutes was good but the result was wrong and it will balance at the end of the season,” he said.

Middendorp said the focus had now shifted to their next game which coincides with the team’s 50th anniversary celebrations against Highlands Park at FNB Stadium on Wednesday.

He said there were certain positions he would have to think hard about with injuries and suspensions likely to force his hand.

“There are some question marks over certain positions going into it,” he said.
