Recuperating Strydom on a Swiss roll
Many people have been wondering what has happened to Piere Strydom.
The former six-time champion jockey was in good form but was suddenly taken off his rides late in
December and has not been seen since.
Very simply, he broke his pinky finger while riding at Kenilworth on 21 December. “It was disappointing because I had picked up some decent rides and had to give them up. Fortunately, I only missed out on one winner.”
Strydom has used the break to spend some time relaxing – at a ski resort in Switzerland. “I’m in Veysonnaz, which is in the south, close to the French border,” he said on Saturday. “I would have loved to ski but sadly, with a broken finger, that’s not possible. So, all I can do is stand on the slopes and watch everybody else.”
He will be flying back to South Africa on Saturday, so he is not riding at the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate meeting. “Sorry to miss the meeting but with a broken finger I have no choice in the matter.
“But come the Sun Met, I’ll be there!”
