Chiefs are forging ahead

MALULEKA: LOSS IS JUST A SMALL HICCUP

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

George Maluleka believes this will be Kaizer Chiefs’ special year as he thinks they can go all the way and put the cherry on top by winning the Absa Premiership title in the year

Amakhosi celebrate their 50th anniversary. The midfielder said the bad start to the year they had as they lost 2-1 to SuperSport United last weekend is something they are no longer thinking about as they forge forward.

“It would be very special,” said Maluleka on what it would mean for them to win the league title, especially this year. “This is a special year – the club’s 50th anniversary. We didn’t start the year on a good note but the performance spoke for us. We have a very talented, strong and ambitious team.

“There are games where it looked like we wouldn’t get anything out but we won. There is a lot of fight in the team. I firmly believe we can go all the way, but we have to take it per game,” he added.

Chiefs – who were formed on January 7, 1970 by Kaizer Motaung – will tomorrow have a celebratory event before their Absa Premiership

match against Highlands Park at FNB Stadium.

Maluleka understands that while the celebrations are necessary to mark such a momentous occasion, they as players have a bigger duty to ensure that at the end of it all they bag the three points. “It’s my birthday, it’s the club’s birthday. But the most important thing is the points. It is very important that we keep going and keep collecting as many points as we can. Right now the target is to, in the next five games, try and get to 50 points. Then I think that will give us a chance to say we are real title contenders.

“There are a few teams up there with us. We don’t want to let our lead slip. We have already seen it go down from 10 points to the current four points.

“There is no pressure on us because we are still on top and we have a chance to collect again on Wednesday (tomorrow).

We let it slip against SuperSport and I really think we deserved the win in that match.

The worst possible result for us should have been a draw. But we will take the defeat with a lot of positives and we have a chance to rectify the mistakes,” said Maluleka, who turns 31 today.
