Cane Cutters in a very good space

- Sibongiseni Gumbi

“Forward ever, backwards never” was how Uthongathi FC coach, Johnny Ferreira responded after his team eked out a 1-0 away win over Richards Bay FC to jump back to the top of the standings in the GladAfrica Championship.

The Cane Cutters had gone on a dry run since the start of the year which resulted in Ajax Cape Town overtaking them at the top. But the win which came courtesy of Menzi Ndwandwe’s goal, saw the Durban side open up two-point lead at the top.

The Urban Warriors do however have a game in hand, which they play tomorrow afternoon and if they win, they will get back to the top again.

Ferreira and his team have come through some challenges this season as they had to start their campaign later than everyone else with ownership issues at the club forcing the Premier Soccer League to postpone their games until it was resolved.

This was amid rumours that Shawn Mkhize (nee Mpisane) had taken over at the club. That has however since been resolved with Mkhize opting to buy Real Kings instead.

And recently, the club was under some scrutiny yet again when rumours that there was a power struggle going on surfaced. This also led to Ferreira allegedly being put on “special leave” at some point.

This was followed by the run of poor results with insiders claiming that the uncertainty was the cause. But it would seem that all is well now and Ferreira is back at his job.

Ajax will, meanwhile hope to also curb their slippery trend which has seen them lose two games in a row. The Urban Warriors visit Kings tomorrow at Chatsworth Stadium.

It will take a gallant effort for Andries Ulderlinks’ side to get positive results at the Magic Boys who also fancy themselves for automatic promotion.

Joel Masutha’s side are seven points off the top and will look to make up so they can keep the leaders in their sights.

Kings, who have had some controversial decisions going their way in recent games which has raised eyebrows, also come off a defeat and look to make amends, especially being at home for this one.
