Mermaid will entice the punters

- Ken Nicol

Seattle Mermaid could do swimmingly for punters today at the hastily arranged Fairview Polytrack meeting.

The card features a number of open contests but Seattle Mermaid makes strong appeal in Race 6 – a MR 68 Handicap over 1000m.

Greg Cheyne very seldom flies back to Cape Town without riding a winner for his boss Alan Greeff, and this looks like his top ride of the day.

This four-year-old filly takes on males but that was no problem last time and she meets a similar class of field as she seeks a hattrick of wins over this 1000m. She is in the form of her life and looks a bit too good for MR 68 class.

Despite a widish draw you can expect her to get up late and win going away once again.

Another Greeff-runner who appeals is Calandra in the eighth and last race. This three-year-old filly took 11 starts to crack her maiden but did so in good style and runner-up World Squared has franked the form.

She should be highly competitive in this moderate FM 64 Handicap affair, even if stable jockey Cheyne appears to have preferred the consistent Ladysmith and has left the ride for Charles Ndlovu.

A decent Eachway prospect is November Storm in Race 7. This gelding isn’t the most consistent but ran on solidly over slightly shorter last time and won his last try over 1300m on the Polytrack, beating subsequent dual-winner Seattle Mermaid in the process.

Add in the pole position draw and he should have every chance.

Veteran trainer Hekkie Strydom doesn’t have a lot of winners these days but could well be celebrating come tonight.
