Bucs want more Zinnbauer mag ic

It is easy to see why Orlando Pirates players have taken such a quick liking to their new coach, Josef Zinnbauer who has guided them to six wins and a draw in his first seven matches in charge of the Soweto giants. On paper, and perhaps stereotypically based on his German roots, Zinnbauer is expected to be a tough task master who doesn’t hesitate to whip anyone who doesn’t toe the line.

But the 49-year-old mentor has proved to be quite the opposite of that with videos of him dancing with his players after games flooding social media. Even his manner of speaking is calmer and more charming – in fact he has that enigmatic playboy charm of famous movie and music stars. He looks like he is smiling even when he is not.

Speaking ahead of his team’s crucial Nedbank Cup Last 32 encounter against Bidvest Wits, on at Orlando Stadium tomorrow, Zinnbauer revealed what has made it easier for his players to adapt to his ways.

“We have fun before, during and after training. We are winning and the players are dancing and putting videos on social media. If we were losing maybe we wouldn’t put them on social media but we are doing well at the moment and we are having fun. My approach is to have one-onone with the players after training and that helps them improve,” he said.

“It is my job. I am always working. So, I don’t know if it’s a new thing or old thing for the players but it’s my system, it’s what I do. I speak with the players (individually) and work with them in individual sessions after training,” he said when asked about the team’s sudden rejuvenation.

“And maybe it’s good for the players that we do this, I don’t know. For me it’s about doing my job and I always do it like that. Maybe that helps improve the mentality. But we have a mental coach too and he works closely with us. We speak about everything before he goes to the squad, who have improved at this moment,” he added.
