Regional racing festival attracts nearly 200 contestant­s

Regional racing will return to the Zwartkops Raceway near Pretoria in style this Saturday, with close to 200 competitor­s taking to the tarmac during the venue’s September Regional Festival.

Heading up the programme will be two races for the Pozidrive VW Challenge brigade, with 37 drivers to face the starter.

Victory favourites should include Rory Atkinson (BHIT Polo), Wayne Masters (Performanc­e Masters Polo), Dawie van der Merwe (Universal Polo), Waldie Meintjies (Bluebelt Polo), Leon Odendaal (Bluebelt Polo) and Robyn Kriel (T-Rex Polo)).

Leading contenders in the Car Care Clinic 111 races for Sports and Saloon Cars will be Louis Scholtz (Car Care Clinic Golf), Wouter Roos (Car Care Clinic VW Supa Polo), Mark du Toit (TAR BMW Z4), Lenard Archer (ACD Hyundai i20), Andre de

Lange (Roofsure Ford Focus ), Ishmael Peck (Honda Ballade), and Johan van der Vyver (Deflaw Subaru STi).

Some of the closest racing should be provided by the Hankook Formula Vee contingent, with top contenders Jaco Schriks (Lube Station Vee), Gert van den Berg (Hankook Vee), Lushen Ramchander (Liqui Moly Vee) and Lendl Jansen (Bull Security Vee).

Jonathan du Toit (TAR Honda Civic) must be the men to beat in the Car Care Clinic SuperHatch races, challenged by people like Lenard Archer (ACD Hyundai Getz), Andre de Lange (Roofsure Nissan Sabre), Melanie Spurr (AKA VW Polo), Louis Scholtz (Honda Civic) and Courtney Nicholl (VW Motorsport Polo).

A total of 29 contenders will tackle the races for Clubmans and Sportscars, with frontrunne­rs to include Pieter Zeelie (Speads RS12), James Forbes (ADR MCE3), Riaan Draper (Auto Classic Peugeot 206), Gerald Wright (Opel Sportsm 2000) and Dean Wolson (Opel Sports 2000).

Topping the Historic part of the programme will be races for SKF Pre-1966 Little Giants contenders, with frontrunne­rs to include Vic Campher (Volvo 122S), Carel Pienaar (Lotus Cortina), Mark du Toit (TAR Alfa GT), Chad Ten Doeschate (Alfa Sprint Spider) and Ishmael Baloyi (TAR GSM Dart).

The Midvaal Historic races will see top contenders like Eugene Gouws (Master Mowers Firenza CanAm), Rene van Rensburg (Sv Tech Ford Escort), Ian Kilburn (Collectibl­e Wheels Datsun Coupe) and Travis Jensen (Sv Tech Datsun Datsun GX).

The Monoposto races will see a variety of Formula M cars on track, driven by the likes of Koos Posthumus (Formula M), Damien Archer (Advanced Wound Care M) and Charles Williamson (Formula M).

Rounding out events will be two Bridgeston­e Challenge Superbike races, with top contenders to include Hein McMahon (BDJ Freight BMW S1000RR), Ian Harwood (TRP Berik Kawasaki ZX190), Sifiso Themba (Wakahina Kawasaki Zx10) and Byron Rothquel (BDJ Freight BMW S1000RR).
