1 230 people nabbed in blitz

Gauteng police arrested more than 1 230 people over the weekend for various alleged crimes.

According to police spokespers­on Captain Mavela Masondo, 450 people were arrested in the Tshwane district during multidisci­plinary operations.

The operations led to the closure of five illegal shebeens and people were arrested for alleged crimes such as the contravent­ion of the Disaster Management Act, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of stolen property, public drinking, dealing in drugs, assault, rape and general theft.

More than 45 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and for illegal gathering.

About 356 suspects were arrested in Ekurhuleni, 13 of whom were arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Nineteen were arrested for possession of drugs and other illegal substances.

Other alleged offences included rape, murder, attempted carjacking, theft of vehicles, possession of unlicensed firearms, fraud and malicious damage to property.

In the West Rand, joint operations were conducted and resulted in the arrest of 264 people. The operations focused on stop-andsearche­s, vehicle check points and rural safety. – News24 Wire
