Hewitson to fly his flag

- Jack Milner

Lyle Hewitson is among the plethora of jockeys now travelling to Port Elizabeth, taking advantage of the lifted travelling ban restrictions.

He has picked up some decent rides at Fairview on Friday when they race on the Polytrack and it would come as something of a surprise of he does not come away with a couple of winners.

The two most interesting come up in Races 5 and 7 where he is aboard Fly My Flag and Quinlan respectively.

Fly My Flag looks particularly appealing as this daughter of Querari could be anything. She is certainly looking an exciting prospect based on her last run and the route trainer Sharon Kotzen has taken with her so far.

She made her debut in the Listed East Cape Nursery over 1200m on the turf in June against the colts. There was no money for her – she went off at 50-1 – and after showing some solid early pace, she finished sixth, beaten 11.25 lengths by Global Drummer.

Three winners have come from that form line, including Fly My Flag who won a Maiden Plate against the colts over 1200m on the Polytrack. She went off at odds of 5-4 and won by 8.25 lengths.

This time she takes on a far stronger field in a FM 90 Handicap over 1300m on the Polytrack where she carries just 52.5kg, is drawn No 1 and has Hewitson in the irons.

Quinlan contests a Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m and this Yvette Bremner-trained gelding has run against the best in the country in Grade 1 races. He is at least 3.5kg better handicapped than any runner in this event and if not in need of the outing after a 189-day break, will be very hard to beat.
