Dr Dulcy wins a Feather
The Citizen’s Dr Dulcy Stapler Rakumakoe was named Role Model of the Year at the 12th annual Feather Awards, on Wednesday at Constitution Hill.
The ceremony observed social distancing but still managed to be an intimate evening, filled with electrifying performances, emotional speeches and plenty of energy.
Synonymous for it’s colourful live entertainment and witt y commentary, the carefully scaled- down affair did not fail to deliver with outstanding live performance from the legendary Gloria Bosman.
Guests flew the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/gender diverse, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ+) flag high and belted out this year’s theme, Turn Up the Love .
Co-founder of the Feathers Thami Kotlolo said: “The main reason for hosting these awards during this trying period was to continue celebrating the LGBTIQ+ community and turn up the love.
“Every year, we come together to celebrate our diversity and also inclusion for all, and we felt we need it even more so in 2020.
“We party hard but we work even harder. “The ongoing LGBTIQ+ dialogues in rural communities across the country continues to help us grow and give us a voice.”
Film director, writer and actor Thishiwe Ziqubu took the award as the best-styled individual, while entrepreneur Gorata Nzimande was voted Hunk of the Year. Hot Chick of the Year went to actress Siphesihle Ndaba.
SA’s favourite captain, Siya Kolisi, was the obvious choice for Sport Personality of the Year.
Best Rainbow Parent Award was scooped by Napo Masheane, while Rainbow UCT took Best LGBTIQ Student Movement for their extensive contribution to the community, and Best LGBTIQ Initiative in the Public Sector award went to Constitution Hill for their on- going support. Engage Men’s Health won the Best LGBTIQ Initiative: Private Sector award.
The super talent model and entertainer Refilwe Modiselle scooped the Diva Extraordinaire of the Year award, while the Media Award of the Year went to TV show Motswako.
Coconut Kelz took Social Media Personality of the Year.
V Vaivi Swartz and Sape Maodi-Swartz Mao were named the Cutest Cut Couple of the Year.
T The Simon Nkoli Award was bestowed bes on queen of the night Gloria Glor Bosman.
T The African Feather of the Year Yea accolade went to Ugandan dan LGBT advocate Dr Frank Mugisha. Mug Having won the Ro Robert F Kennedy Human R Rights Award and Thorolf Rafto Memorial Prize 2011, this executive director of Sexual Minorities Uganda continues to be one of the most prominent advocates for LGBT rights.
