Police probe toddler twins home drowning

- Citizen reporter

The police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating the circumstances around the drowning of twin toddlers Ethan and Sebastian Ngcobo.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the twoyear-old twins drowned on Saturday in a pool at their home in Kloof.

Mbele said Pinetown police were handling the matter.

Rescue Care said paramedics arrived at the scene to find the twins had fallen into the swimming pool.

“Paramedics assessed the two and attempted to resuscitate them.

“However, their attempts were not successful and both boys were declared deceased on the scene. At this stage, the events leading up to the incident are unknown,” the paramedics said.

According to East Coast Radio, the toddlers’ maternal grandmother Leanne Ngcobo said the family was not doing well. “Our lives revolved around them. We would wake up to them. Going to bed revolved around them.”

Ngcobo said the children were under the supervision of their carer at the time and the family was not at home. There was also a fence around the pool, which was usually locked, so they were not sure how the children got into the pool area.

“What we have seen on the CCTV footage it looked like they walked to the pool area and were sitting together and talking at the end of the pool.”

“One of the boys slipped in and his brother first tried to run for help and when he saw there was no one he tried to go and fetch him.

“And that’s what happened and from what we could see, the [carer] hadn’t observed them for an hour. She hadn’t gone out to check on them or look for them.”
