Go Crazy and Chris Brown climb on the Soul Train

American singer-song writer Chris Brown dominated at the 2020 Soul Train awards.

He won four awards, taking Best R&B/Soul Male Artist outright and sharing the honours for Song of the Year, Best Dance Performanc­e and Best Collaborat­ion with Young Thug for their hit Go Crazy.

H.E.R. followed closely with two awards: Best R&B/Soul Female Artist and The Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award for I Can’t Breathe.

The Soul Train awards celebrated the best in soul, R&B and hip-hop by highlighti­ng living legends and breakout stars, with unrivalled musical moments and show-stopping performanc­es by Lady of Soul Honoree Monica, Brandy, Ella Mai, Jazmine Sullivan, Snoh Aalegra and CeeLo Green, with duets by Charlie Wilson and Smokey Robinson as well as Lucky Daye and Babyface.

The 2020 Soul Train awards premièred on BET Africa (DStv Channel 129) on Monday with the one-hour pre-show Soul-Coming: Countdown to the Soul Train Awards, which was followed by the presentati­on of the 12 awards and the post show DJ Cassidy’s Pass the Mic: BET Soul Train Edition.

Catch a repeat of the action tonight at noon, tomorrow at 10pm or Sunday at 1.30pm.

The awards ceremony was hosted by the iconic best-friend duo of Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold, who also brought their chemistry to the stage as the show’s opening musical act.

They kicked things off with an electrifyi­ng song-and-dance tribute to the power of black women.

Soul Train Certified award-winner Brandy performed a medley of her recent hits Say Something and Borderline, while English singer-song writer Ella Mai performed her latest single Not Another Love Song.

Lucky Daye shut the stage down with Babyface for a performanc­e of their new collaborat­ion Shoulda, while Wilson and Robinson gave a tribute to gospel legend Rance Allen, who died on 31 October.

This year’s Soul Cypher featured R&B stars PJ Morton, Chanté Moore, Shanice and Stokely.
