It is all about Al in Cape

- Jack Milner

Once again, bettors are faced with a complex card at Kenilworth tomorrow where bankers look quite obscure.

However, those who are looking for one horse to rely on in the exotics could take a chance on All About Al in Race 7, a MR 96 Handicap over 1600m.

Grant van Niekerk steered the highly rated Captain Al colt to victory two starts back and is reunited with Adam Marcus' charge, who finished a close-up third in his last start.

With just 53kg on his back, Van Niekerk back in the plate from gate No 2 and blinkers on for the first time, All About Al looks destined to bounce back to winning ways.

The only real threat looks to be Royal Watch, who finished 0.20 lengths ahead of All About Al in their last meeting which was at Durbanville. It is worth noting, however, that All About Al is unbeaten at Kenilworth while both of his two narrow defeats came at Durbanville. So, with the change of course and the addition of blinkers, the Marcus-trained runner should reverse the result.

Bold Respect has been running against some of the best sprinters in the country of late, but Brett Crawford’s charge takes a huge drop in class when he lines up in Race 5, a Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m.

He was touched off by Russet Air in last year’s Grade 1 Cape Flying Championship over this course and distance last year and this year finished a 4.25-length fourth behind Run Fox Run in the same race, despite hanging badly over the final 200m and making some contact with another runner.

He is among the best weighted runners in this race and could give Callan Murray a winning ride.

The main threat could come from Pleasedtomeetyou, who will be ridden by Van Niekerk for the Andre Nel yard.
