Explanation of F1 penalty system
The letter by Peter C in this week’s paper refers: Formula 1 power units comprise numerous components, including an internal combustion engine (ICE), turbocharger, energy recovery systems, electric motors, etc.
Teams are allowed a certain number of each component per season without penalty. Exceeding these numbers are penalised.
Max Verstappen received a penalty requiring him to start at the back of the grid for changing an entire power unit. Hamilton only changed the ICE, which is a 10-position penalty.
