Play chicken with drive-thrus

- Hein Kaiser

Today many households are cooking on gas, which now costs far more than the electricity we don’t have. We plan dining out not just by preference, but by price, distance and fuel considerations, we drink wine by the box and soon we’ll have to dilute orange squash with double the water to make it stretch further.

Now cut the lament, and plan your pennies so you can indulge, every now and then. But forget about driving to your favourite franchise yourself. With the price of fuel being what it is, I’d rather get my meal biked and tip the driver handsomely.

During the course of a fortnight, I tried several drive-thus.

The service was so slow, that the 20 minutes it took between arrival and departure, could have paid for a burger or delivery, less the frustration.

But there are two standout brands who seem to get it right, every time. And they both serve chicken. It’s KFC and Chicken Licken.

I tested three outlets each, and every time the queue moved quickly, at both brands.
