Work smart while ge ing back into the groove

- – Citizen reporter

After hibernating in our cosy homes all winter, it’s time to get back to the gym.

Now it’s warmed up, it’s time to jump back on the wagon. Here’s how.

Take it easy at first

Set realistic goals. Your muscles probably won’t handle the same strain as before.

Goals give you the motivation to move forward and push yourself a little more each time.

Ask yourself, are my goals Smart: specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timebound? Set out an incremental training programme and give yourself goals to work towards and keep you motivated.

Don’t change everything at once

Some of us are all-or-nothing people but when you’ve been out of touch with health and fitness for too long, this could be your undoing. When we take on too much, it could end up becoming overwhelming, causing us to get frustrated and give up on the whole thing.

Give yourself time to rest between workout days – at least one day between workouts.

Plan your week with gym days in mind, pack your gym bag so it’s ready when you’re heading out, or – better yet – leave your bag in your boot so it’s always near.

We might be tempted to overhaul our eating habits and cut out any food group we think will slow our progress. Don’t make too many changes at once.

Prepare your body for what’s to come

Apart from remembering to stretch before any workout routine (which you should always do), it’s as important to make sure your body is nourished enough to fuel your energy levels. Most good wellness stores sell supplements to help you feel recharged throughout the day.

From boosters and pre and post workout shakes to protein bars and electrolyte drink mixes, there are great ways to fuel both your body and your workout.

We all know the benefits of regular exercise, but getting back into the groove after a break can be difficult. Make sure you’re clear on your goals, don’t push yourself right off the bat and fuel your body with the right supplements.

The hardest part is starting but looking good and feeling better makes it all worth it.
