The Southern African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) announced the introduction of an exclusive corporate social investment (CSI) programme, the music business lab publishing training programme with Music Business Lab on 11 April.

This one-of-a-kind curriculum – available only to music publishers and self-published Samro’s full and associate members – is intended to provide members with critical business skills that will support long-term growth and success in the industry.

This alliance intends to empower 30 music publishers by providing comprehensive training on the subtleties of the music industry, including song publishing. The programme aims to develop talented individuals and build strong music enterprises across the country.

Music Business Lab offers personalised help to grow the African music industry by enabling SMMEs through certified training, incubation, accelerator programmes and professional development.

The organisation is led by experienced industry professionals Ninel Musson (Vth Season) and Beth Arendse (SA Creative Industries Incubator).

Participants will learn strategies for increasing revenue, innovating products and how to evolve as entrepreneurs.

Participants will gain vital skills and information, preparing them to prosper in the difficult music industry.

The programme provides additional benefits such as industry exposure and market access, and promotes personal and professional growth.

Musson says: “Our goal at Music Business Lab is to develop and professionalise the music business ecosystem through curated training with subject matter experts, highly developed incubation programmes, capacity-building and market access.

“We will take participants of the programme through an unparalleled learning journey into the business.”

The programme will select Samro publisher members with cohorts hailing from Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal to guarantee an expansive and impactful reach.

It will begin with a rigorous six-week phase of callouts, screenings and selections, paving the way for an intensive online educational journey.

Participants will have the unique opportunity to glean insights from seasoned industry veterans and obtain certification from the University of Pretoria.

With the programme launch, Samro reaffirms its steadfast commitment to amplifying and sustaining the South African music industry. This initiative is a powerful testament to the organisation’s unwavering resolve to foster the growth of music entrepreneurs and SMEs nationwide.

The programme rollout highlights Samro’s dedication to the industry’s prosperity.
