LUNCH WITH ZANELE:
La Femme reporter Herolene Uithaler took Protea netball captain Zanele Mdodana to lunch at Kaffeine Coffee Shop to chat about what she relishes in life, and the lessons she has learned from sport
NELSON Mandela Bay’s Protea netball team captain and community role model, Zanele Mdodana, is best known for her sporting achievements, but is also a mother with many hobbies such as music and dance.
During La Femme’s lunch with her at Kaffeine Coffee Shop, the 28-year-old shared her views on sport, money and lifestyle over some white hot chocolate and a bran muffin.
The former finalist in The Herald Miss Port Elizabeth competition talked about the close relationship she has with her four-year-old son, Zukolwakhe, despite the constant travelling that goes hand in hand with her chosen profession.
It doesn’t leave a lot of time to relax, but she manages to fit in ballroom dancing classes and piano lessons too.
What has netball taught you?
Self-discipline, tolerance, acceptance, commitment and teamwork. In a team sport you need others. You can’t do it alone.
What makes you smile?
When I’m fulfilling my purpose and when I know that I am doing what I was meant to do at that particular time. That is when I smile.
What does money mean to you?
If you have money, people will listen. So it is an influential tool.
Are you are a reader, a viewer or a listener?
I’m more of a reader, but I also love music. I have too many favourite books to list them all, but in my top three are two books by the president and founder of the Bahamas Faith Ministries International, Dr Myles Munroe, called Understanding the Purpose and Power of Women and Understanding the Purpose and Power of Men. The third one is written by Bishop T D Jakes and is called Before You Do.
I also love gospel music. My latest craze is Marvin Sapp.
Who do you share your life with?
My son and my family.
What would you save from your home if it was on fire?
My son’s puzzles.
Stilettos or crocs?
Stilettos, most definitely!
What is your biggest “frivolous” spend?
Shoes and bags.
Karaoke song choice?
Give Me Everything Tonight by Ne-Yo
and Pitbull.
When was the last time you tried something new?
Everyday I do something new. This weekend I tried out steak for the very first time and I’m not a big red meat eater.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I love ballroom dancing and I play the piano.
What are your three favourite spots in the Nelson Mandela Bay?
The beachfront just opposite the Pick n Pay village, malls and my home in Walmer Park.
