Aweekend to remember in PE

Urban Run and festival will see thousands flock to CBD

-

WITH entries now closed for Sunday’s Nelson Mandela Bay Herald Urban Run, thousands are expected to descend on the city this weekend for the Urban Run Festival which takes place from 9am on Saturday at the Donkin.

A full programme of events is being anchored by the team from African Drumbeat with interactive percussion sessions, building of musical instruments, Zulu dance lessons for the children and interactive drumming.

Given the festival’s support for Sunday’s National Recycling Day, an inclusion this year is African Drumbeat’s “Junk 4 Funk” workshop which is a team- building initiative using recycled materials to build musical instruments.

Bring along your “junk” to add to the “funky junk” box to embellish the instruments – buttons, beads, feathers, keys, ribbon, or jewellery. Anything goes.

Saturday’s programme also includes a free outdoor aerobics class with Metro Gym starting at 10am. Bring a towel and join in, with free goodies for the early birds. Ibhayi Rhythmic Gymnastics will also give displays at 12.15pm and 2.15pm with an interactive German Shepherd dog show at 11am.

The Rotary Club of PE Sunrise will be raising funds through their Kids Zone, which is open all weekend. Other activities will include interaction with the Scouts. Adults can kick back and enjoy the scenery of the city while listening to the Marimba band in the Mitchells Beer Garden, which is being run by the Rotarians. Various live music groups will be performing on the Coca Cola stage.

Other highlights on Saturday will be Ruan Hollywood (entertainer Gino Fabbri) on his “musical bicycle”, between 1pm and 3pm. The Kids Urban Dash – a fun race for children 14 years and under at the Donkin – starts at 1pm (entry at the starting line).

The Urban Run kicks off at 9am on Sunday at the Donkin. It is possible for spectators to criss-cross around the CBD and catch participants at almost all the obstacles and experience the urban renewal the CBD has undergone.
