Damelin students sew up a storm
THE students at Damelin College filled The Granary in Stanley Street at the weekend with the colourful designs they worked on for their 2012 fashion design course.
Lecturer Bronwyn Daniels said the sold-out show was organised by the students, including securing sponsorships and fundraising for the event.
“This year to raise funds they made fashion accessories for the little stall they set up called ‘Felt Like Love’ – the name seemed fitting as most of the item are made out of felt,” said Daniels. “It was also a good exercise in branding and setting up a business.”
Daniels said the classes were “quite small” hence each sewing project was treated as a creative opportunity. “So there are no boring plain pencil skirts to be found here! For the second semester they really got stuck in and began adding to their range with more creative projects.
“They even made most of their accessories.
“The biggest achievement for me is seeing these students advance their skills and confidence in such a short space of time.”
The class work covered many catwalk trends, including colour blocking and tribal prints and motifs.
Current events also influenced the young designers, with last week’s retirement of SABC television news reader Riaan Cruywagen making it on to one of Enrico Nortje’s fun fringed T-shirts.
