Replace the corrupt education officials

- Sibulele Mzizi, Port Elizabeth

I AM glad finally to see that something is being done about the corrupt Education Department (“Rotten to the core”, November 26).

It is sad to think that from the end of 2009, the pupil transport tender has been cancelled due to service providers not being paid. I know this because my mother was one of the service providers and that money was our only source of income.

Besides this affecting my family and our education, my heart breaks for those kids who were dependent on this transport to be able to go to school. It is revolting to think that such corrupt people are in charge of our Education Department, and they drive fancy cars with their kids in the top private schools, unfortunately at the expense of others.

I attended my high school in Mthatha in a government school where we had to share one text- book among four to six pupils in the classroom. We did not have a library or a laboratory for experiments, we had to use our imagination as we never saw the zinc, copper sulphate, etc.

It is very worrying with the current matric pass rate to think that textbooks were only delivered in July to the Eastern Cape and you have the education minister making preposterous statements such as “I don’t know what happens inside of a classroom”. You can’t help but wonder how such people were even elected to be in such positions.

Hopefully these investigations will reveal even more and result in many people getting fired. There are a lot of people out there who would do way better than those we have right now.
