New sponsor Rafi’s for Friendly City Marathon

THE 22nd staging of The Herald Rafi’s Friendly City Marathon, which takes place from Altona Primary School in Greenbushe­s, Port Elizabeth, on January 26, will feature a brand new sponsor with superb prizes and a new corporate challenge initiative, Achilles race director Wayne Mitchell announced yesterday.

Title sponsor Rafi’s Appliances and Mattresses, who will be giving away generous appliance lucky draw prizes, has committed his company to supporting and growing this well-supported event.

The event includes a 42.2km marathon, to cater for distance runners, a 10km race and a 5km corporate challenge and fun run.

Rafi Selvilya said Rafi’s Appliances and their suppliers were keen to be involved with such a well organised and establishe­d event. “We aim to grow the Friendly City Marathon to involve 2 000 participan­ts.”

The 2013 event beneficiar­y is Reti- na SA. R5 of every R25 corporate entry fee will be donated to Retina SA.

Rafi will hand over twelve superb appliance prizes at the popular attendance-only prize-giving and lucky draw in the Altona school hall. In addition Adidas will be sponsoring six premium pairs of running shoes for the lucky draw valued at R8 000.

The participat­ion league marathon has a cut-off of 5½ hours. The 10km has a cut-off of one hour, 40 minutes. Runners will line up for the marathon at 5am, the 10km at 6.30am and the 5km event at 8.30am.

The first 500 finishers in each race will receive medals. All participan­ts will also be eligible for lucky draw prizes. The cost is R75 for the marathon, R40 for the 10km and R25 for the 5km. The temporary licence for the marathon and 10km is R25. Marathon runners over 65 will only pay R35.
