Herald study kit a big hit
RIGHT TO EDUCATION: Parents and pupils from Aaron Gqadu Secondary Primary School demonstrate outside the district education department offices in Port Elizabeth yesterday THE Matric Survival Kit – in The Herald each Tuesday and also distributed to thousands of pupils – goes a long way in providing additional Grade 12 instruction, pupils and teachers say.
Apart from the free insert in The Herald, the newspaper and General Motors have joined forces to assist matriculants by distributing a further 5 000 Matric Survival Kits to 85 schools.
Victoria Park High School pupils say the kit prepares them for the tough questions in the final exams.
Micaela Pauls, 17, said: “Even after listening very attentively in class, the kit is essential for revision. The level of difficulty also prepares me for the exams.
“Questions are provided by the department so I have an idea of what to expect for the exams.”
The kit also assisted pupils who did not have other study material besides textbooks.
Victoria Park High School principal Mike Vermaak said staff appreciated the extra instruction provided by the survival kit.
He said it had different angles and provided a lot of examples.
The kit is printed weekly throughout the 35-week school year and is available in The Herald circulation area.
Lungisa High School pupil Bubele Feti, 19, said: “I urge all matriculants to take advantage of the kit. It’s challenging and assists with sections you might have missed during class.”
Thozama Chaga, a business teacher at the school, said she had been using the kit since last year. “It’s such an asset to my pupils. The survival kit makes a difference in the educational lives of teachers and pupils.”
