VP in fine form at Port Alfred derby

THE Victoria Park girls’ first hockey team failed to use their chances and were held to a goalless draw by Port Alfred in their schools clash at the weekend.

Although dominant in possession and territory, VP were unable to break down the Port Alfred defence.

The VP second team had a better showing, finishing with a 5-1 win, while VP’s u-14A side won 5-0.

The VP boys’ second team took on the Port Alfred first side and went down 2-0.

The boys’ first team came up against Linkside at the NMMU Astroturf and romped to a 7-1 victory.

Linkside scored the opening goal, but VP soon grabbed the equaliser and then the floodgates opened, with three goals by Winchester Scott, two by Justin Pretorius and one each by Kyle Hodgkinson and Joshua Smith sealing the victory. THE VP first netball side had an excellent match against Port Alfred, winning 45-8, after being particular­ly impressive in attack.

Anouschka de Necker and Matsepo Funani displayed accurate shooting and kept the scoreboard ticking over at regular intervals.

THE first-team rugby clash against Port Alfred was dominated by VP, who romped to a 43-3 win.

The match started off at a great pace, with Port Alfred applying pressure from the kickoff.

But VP’s defensive structure held and they found their rhythm to begin their onslaught.

VP crossed the line six times, through prop Jason Martiens, flank Sandi Gongxeka, inside centre Bantu Johnson (3) and hooker Julius Tatana.

The defining moment of the match was when Johnson scored a 60m individual try.
