BAY Stars are on the lookout for a new coach after the team’s ambitious mentor Mark Harrison left the Port Elizabeth side to join Cape Townbased Premiership league rookies Chippa United.

Harrison, an Englishman who was appointed to help Stars campaign in the SA Football Association Eastern Cape Second Division League to gain promotion to the National First Division next season, has taken over from Graham Harrison, who is not related.

When Mark Harrison joined Stars he said his long-term dream was to make Port Elizabeth one of the powerhouses of South African soccer.

He has guided the side to second place on the log, where they trail leaders Mthatha Bucks by five points with seven league matches remaining.

“It was difficult to leave Bay Stars, but in the end it came down purely to a business decision.

“I had a great time with Bay Stars – and all the players and the staff are very professional.”

Harrison said he would love to come back if a suitable opportunity presented itself, but in the meantime “I could not resist” the offer from Chippa United. “Stars are playing good football and it is possible they could reach the top flight within 24 months.”

Harrison has also coached Mpumalanga Black Aces and Free State outfit African Warriors.

The sixth coach appointed this season, he has already started working with the relegation-threatened Chilli Boys.

Harrison’s appointment comes after the Cape side fired Wilfred Mugeyi last week.

“I am confident the team will still be playing in the PSL next season. We have six games to play and I believe we will make it.”

Stars technical manager Mark Tommy said Harrison had left because he was offered a better salary.

“Of course it is not an ideal situation for Bay Stars, who are making a huge effort for promotion to the National First Division.

“The team’s performance is a direct result of the coach, but now he has been noticed and lured away.” Tommy will take temporary charge. Stars drew 1-1 against Tornado in a Safa provincial Second Division clash at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane at the weekend.
