WHEN he was named in the EP Craven Week rugby side last month, Grey High School scrumhalf Matthew Alborough achieved the rare feat of having been selected for every provincial age-group team since he played under-12.

Now 18 and in matric, Alborough, who went to Charlo Primary and spent a year at Pretoria Boys High before attending Grey in Port Elizabeth, completed the full set with his Craven Week selection.

Over the years he has been chosen for the EP U12, U13, U16, Academy U18 and the provincial sevens team.

One of his friends who has come close to achieving the same feat is Grey loose forward Bathandwa Cafu.

“Bathandwa has been in every side except the EP sevens team last year,” Alborough said.

Alborough attended his first Craven Week last year with the EP U18 Academy side, and is now looking forward to next month’s tournament in Polokwane – the 50th anniversary of the tournament. “It’s quite an honour to play for the province and this year I am aiming to try to make the SA Schools side.

“Recently Scott Mathie from EP Kings has helped me lot with my training .”

Alborough has long-term visions of continuing with the sport, but aims to combine his rugby with studying.

“Hopefully I can get a contract with the Kings. I have had a few approaches, but at this stage I want to keep my options open.”
