You thought lonely nights were bad? Wait, there’s more

-

IF YOU are awake and really, really bored with the DStv offerings, try tuning in to the Home Channel (176) after midnight on a Friday. In this particular time slot there’s an endless litany of those adverts you love to hate, the Verimark or Homemark gadgets which come with many “and that’s not alls”.

It’s mind-blowing in the most mindless way (if such a concept is possible).

You start watching and then can’t stop in the belief that the next ad can’t be worse than the previous one.

That’s sad enough but even sadder is the fact that there are people out there who are as dumb as the adverts.

People actually spend hard-earned cash on completely unnecessary items.

For instance: making soup has to be one of the easiest and least time-consuming meal options. But now, folks, there’s a soup machine that takes all the hassles out of cooking.

Simply throw in the ingredients and let the machine determine how long it should cook them and at what temperature. The clever little critter then blends the ingredients into a perfect, creamy, one pot (or jug) soup. Which you could also have made in a pot on the stove and then creamed with a far-cheaper hand blender.

But wait, that’s not all: If you splash out R1 500 on the soup machine, you will get recipe books that can help you lose weight while still eating hearty soups. Now that’s a bargain at any price.

Then there’s the plug in, hands-free MP3 player which also charges your cellphone and sells for not R500, not R400, not even R300 but just R99.99 folks (why not add on the cent and make it R100?).

Can’t make it to the hairdressers and have an important interview?

Grab a can of spray on colour which guarantees to cover those grey strands, no matter what your natural hair colour.

And let’s not forget the get-out-of-gym-free card in the form of the jumpstart juicer seven day weightloss programme – if you believe the hype, “start on Saturday and you could be up to 5kg lighter by Friday”.

As mentioned it’s all sad, very sad. But sadder still is resorting to watching it in pursuit of late night entertainment.
