(2) ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US Constructed like an episode of The X Factor, with 3D performances from their Take Me Home concert tour broken up by ersatz candid footage. There are pre-gig hijinks and post-gig heart-to-hearts, all of which the boys conduct in an at least partial state of undress. R C (Bridge, Boardwalk)

(5) THE SMURFS 2: Ho-hum. More of the same – which is okay if you happen to have a soft spot for the little blue people, but there is little more on offer here than what was dished up previously. B A (Bridge, Boardwalk, Walmer Park)

(4) RED 2: With Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren. “Retired & Extremely Dangerous” this lot may well be, but after two films proving they can’t get it together, the emphasis really ought to be on retired. T R (Bridge, Walmer Park)

(4) 2 GUNS: Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg star as a couple of sparring cops in an ill-fated heist movie that represents a curious mixing of genres: the thriller and the comedy, with a dash of bromance. J M (Boardwalk)

(6) WE’RE THE MILLERS: The film is a minor coup de gross-out about four low-lifes who smuggle an enormous quantity of cannabis from Mexico to the United States by motor home. This is a fine collection of cheap and sleazy jokes, well-told. R C (Walmer Park, Boardwalk) Reviewers: BA – Brett Adkins; RC – Robbie Collin;

JM – Jenny McCartney; T R– Tim Robey
