Liverpool, Chiefs legends to clash

- Sbu Mjikeliso

CLUB die-hards such as Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs and Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo are a dying breed, according to former footballer John Barnes.

Therefore Liverpool coach Brendan Rogers is on the right track by calling old Reds stars such as Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler and Rob Jones to share their expertise with the club’s youngsters, he said.

Some of those Liverpool legends will be in South Africa on November 16 for a clash against Kaizer Chiefs legends at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

“You are not going to have players like Ryan Giggs, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher anymore,” Barnes said.

“Clubs will lose their identity. In the next 20 years you are not going to have players stay at one club for 10 to 15 years and identify with that club. Robin van Persie, for example, is not going to identify with Manchester United. Those days are gone.

“Doctor Khumalo is synonymous with Kaizer Chiefs and its brand. I do not know what football is like in South Africa but can we see any player staying at one club for 30 years?”

Liverpool will bring old European Cup (now Champions League) winners Ian Callaghan, Alan Kennedy and Dietmar Hamann, who was part of the 2005 Champions League winning squad.

Chiefs have called up legends Neil Tovey, Gary Bailey, Shane MacGregor and Lucas Radebe for the exhibition game.
