Feast of goals expected in women’s derbies

IT is showtime in women’s soccer and a feast of goals is expected during the Safa Eastern Cape’s Sasol Women’s League in Nelson Mandela Bay when City Lads play two derbies – against Manchester Babes and Continental Express – this weekend.

Log-leaders City Lads, from New Brighton, will play their first game of the weekend against Express at the Wolfson Stadium tomorrow at 2pm.

Lads will then travel to Uitenhage to clash with Babes at the Jabavu Stadium on Sunday at 1pm.

Lads are the defending champi- ons of the league title and the title race is another factor which will intensify the rivalry of the derbies.

Lads coach Andile Mrwerwe said the players had grown in stamina and they could handle the pressure of playing two games in one weekend.

He said the team had 18 players to choose from for both matches.

“This will be a tough weekend for the players but I will have to rest my regular players for the tough match against our biggest rivals, Babes, on Sunday because the Uitenhage outfit are in the top four on the log, which means they are close behind us.

“Continental are just a small fish in the sea because they are at the bottom of the log and they do not pose any danger to us, hence we will give other players game time against them.”

Mrwerwe said the toughest game would undoubtedly be against Babes because the two teams had a long history of rivalry in the Sasol League. They aimed to win both matches.
