Open day for schools hockey clinic

- Neale Emslie

ALEXANDER Road High hockey coach Kyle Schimper is holding an open day on Sunday for a high-performance clinic he plans to set up aimed at Eastern Province’s schools players.

A premier league player and qualified coach, Schimper will be holding group and individual sessions, depending on the demand.

Under the banner Hockey360, Schimper and coaching colleague Dean Gow will co-ordinate the activities and will employ qualified coaches to assist them.

“I have had some interest already, but Sunday is really a test day to see what the demand will be like,” Schimper said yesterday.

“We are planning to hold individual sessions during the week and group sessions on Saturdays and Sundays.”

Outlining their objectives, Schimper said: “We will cater for two specific groups of hockey players, namely primary school pupils [Grade 6 and 7] and high school pupils who are potential EP hockey representatives.

“We will strive to improve hockey at school level in the Eastern Province as a whole, as well as cater for the elite hockey players in EP.

“Hockey360 strives to create a safe and structured coaching clinic for young aspiring hockey players. Hockey360 will improve their skills and challenge them to reach their goals, as well as improving their knowledge of modern astroturf hockey.”

The arrangements for tomorrow are: primary schools registration (8am-8.30am); practice session (8.30-9.30am); high schools registration (9.30-10am); practice session (10am-11am).
