Wilson twins dominate 15km race in Gelvandale

THEY did it again. The Wilson twins from Sherwood were the first junior females past the post in the Gelvan Athletic Club 15km race in Gelvandale on Saturday.

Charlo AC runners Megan and Kimberly Wilson have been in excellent form recently, with Megan representing Eastern Province at the national 21km championship in East London where she finished second in the junior female category and pocketed R4 000.

On Saturday, Megan won comfortably from her twin in 1hr 13min 23sec with JeanMarie Foreman (St Albans SC) third.

Zolani Ngqaqa (Temp) was the overall winner in 48:31. Nedbank AC runner Meklikhaya Frans beat teammate Anele Maliza by a mere two seconds to finish second in a time of 49:20.

In the women’s category, Jene Banfield (Run Walk for Life), who also represented EP at the national championship, won in 1:04:42. Grizelda Pietersen (Maxed Elite) was second in 1:10:21 with Debbie Dodd (Charlo) third in 1:17:31.

Brendon Effenaar (Maxed Elite) won the junior men category in 55:22.

ý Saturday marked the official International Parkrun Day which commemorates the launch of the international Parkrun on October 2 2004.

The Hobie Beach Parkrun, which is now in its ninth week, attracted a field of 245 runners, of whom 61 were first-timers.

Although the Parkrun is not a race, all athletes are timed. Keegan Cooke’s time of 17:13 is a new course record. Veteran athlete Margie Saunders’s time of 21:07 is rated, on age-grade scoring, eighth in the world.
