Baxter positive about Chiefs contract

- Chumani Bambani

STUART Baxter is optimistic about extending his stay as head honcho at Kaizer Chiefs with negotiations for a new contract under way.

On Saturday the Scot took a step closer to adding another piece of silverware to the Amakhosi cabinet.

Chiefs advanced to the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout Cup with a 3-0 win over PSL rookies Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The coach confirmed that he was eager to lengthen his stint with the team as soon as con- tract terms were reached. “Their attitude is that, ‘We like what you’re doing, and want the continuity we always spoke about’, and I’m very happy here. I would like to stay – we just need to put that in black and white.”

The win over Polokwane City ensured Amakhosi improved on their results from the competition where they were knocked out of the first round by Wits last year.

Baxter was pleased with the side’s performance, and stressed the importance of the club reclaiming the trophy they last won in 2010.

While Baxter is on the verge of extending his contract, City are yet to confirm a replacement for Duncan Lechesa, who resigned recently.

Eduardo Schoeler has been caretaker coach.

The Brazilian-born fitness trainer would not confirm his ambitions of taking over the reins permanently.

“I work for Polokwane City – if they want me as fitness trainer or coach, they will decide.”

Under the care of the Brazilian, City registered their first league win in their last PSL match as they beat Ajax Cape Town 2-0.

The side will be out of action for two weeks, giving them ample time to find a new coach.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi will be taking part in the Macufe Cup in Bloemfontein next Sunday.

Although the side will be without their national team players and Baxter also plans to rest some of his senior players for the cup clash, the Chiefs coach was sure he would field a strong side.

He said the game “will be an opportunity for those who haven’t really competed to get a chance. But we will definitely put up a competitive team.”
